President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that the administration’s policy is to promote and enhance community-based policing.

The President made the statement while speaking at the inauguration of the Police Research and Innovation 2023 conference, a 3 days conference organized by Ministry of Home Affairs, the Maldives Police Service, and the Police Board.

Speaking at the conference he stated that a strong relationship of mutual trust between the police and the community they serve is critical to maintaining public safety and effective policing. He also spoke about the enhancements made to policing with the new Maldives Police Service Act enacted in 2021. He stated that the holistic enforcement of the law relies on the relationship and cooperation between the police and the community.

In addition, President Solih discussed the administration’s initiatives to advance community-based enforcement and modernize it while highlighting some of the accomplishments of the previous five years. He stated that body cameras were now being worn by frontline police officers and added that Tasers would be introduced this year.

The President emphasized the crucial role that the National College of Policing and Law Enforcement created in Addu City played in the growth of the police force and hailed the establishment of the college as a step toward producing law enforcement officers who are educated and well-trained.
