Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has bought three additional boats to boost fish procuring capacity.

According to the company, these three boats were purchased to increase fish procuring capacity and that it has started the process of changing the registration of these boats. However, company did not specify the date that boats will be brought to Male’ and further details of the boats. But company noted that the information would be revealed later.

One of the main complaints of fishermen is that they cannot sell the fish they catches during the fishing season in the country, especially in the south. Therefore, MIFCO is making an efforts to resolve the issue. All the three newly purchased boats were bought to increase the company’s capacity. MIFCO currently has 2 boats that can store 100 ton and 90 tons of fish.

As part of its efforts to find a permanent solution to the complaints of fishermen, the government has also initiated projects to upgrade MIFCO’s fish procurement centers. In this regard, a cold storage facility will be set up at Felivaru to store 4,000 tons of fish and a brine freezing facility that can store 200 tons of fish per day. Also, a refrigerated sea water facility and other facilities related to these equipment will also be set up.
