On the westside of Utheemu’s coastal area, a historic well has been resurfaced again.

According to Utheemu council, the Well was resurfaced in the westside of the Island due to severe coastal erosion.

Westside beach of the Island (Utheemu Thun’di) is the famous beach that National  hero Mohamed Thakurufaanu used to catch birds according to historians.

Moreover, according to the council president Abdulla Rasheed, several historic items have been previously found from that area of the Island, this includes the Well resurfaced back in October. Furthermore, Abdulla Rasheed stated that the council plans to relocate the Well to Boduthakurufaanu Memorial Center or to Utheemu Ganduvaru.

Furthermore, the council has informed the Ministry of Heritage regarding the resurfaced Well, and Well will be protected and preserved under the guidance from the Ministry of Heritage and in accordance to Heritage Act in collaboration with Boduthakurufaanu Memorial Center, Utheemu Council, Ministry of Heritage, and clubs and NGOs of the island. Abdulla Rasheed noted that similar to the last time the Ministry of Heritage has requested to relocate the Well to Boduthakurufaanu Memorial Center.

In addition, according to the council, it is estimated that the Well was built at the same time as Utheemu Palace, if so Well will be from 500 years ago.
