Dhidhdhoo Council has decided to provide waste collection services to households in the island.
According to Dhidhdhoo Council President Abdulla Rasheed, a specific date has not been set for the service to begin, but registration for the service has now been opened.
The service was previously provided by Fenaka Corporation in the island. At the time, the service was provided at a fee of MVR 50 per household. The council has provided the service to the public free of charge for the past three months after Fenaka stopped providing the service.
Moreover, Rasheed added that some changes have been brought to the waste collection policy this year. In addition to home-based waste, the council will also collect waste generated in the kitchen. Therefore, a fee of MVR 150 will be charged from a household.
Furthermore, Dhidhdhoo Fenaka will also provide assistance to the council when the council commences the project. 1,200 houses in the island are currently seeking the service.
In addition, the council has stated that action will be taken against those who dispose of waste in different parts of the island in violation of the new regulations. Also, Rasheed expressed that they hope the new service will solve the issue of illegal waste disposal in the islands.
