Flocks of Greater Flamingos spotted in various islands of Thiladunmathi.

These rare mesmerizing scenes are spotted in Ha. Filladhoo, Ha. Baarah, and HDh. Kulhudhuffushi. Flamingos are protected by the law under the vulnerable category of extinction.

Migratory Flamingos were first spotted in Filladhoo. According to eyewitnesses from the Island, 14 flamingos were spotted on Sunday and this is the first time they have seen these birds. And they predicted their next destination was Ha. Baarah.

It is rumored that these birds were catched in Ha. Baarah using nets and other methods. Also, concerns were raised by people since these birds have been put to sale after catching them. Moreover, pictures of Flamingos in Kulhudhuffushi city mangrove have gone viral on social media.

Usually Flamingos are pink in color, however, Flamingo flocks spotted in Thiladhunmathi were white in color since they have not received enough nutrients.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced 104 species of birds including Greater Flamingo as protected birds back on June 23, 2021. Therefore, under the law actions will be taken against the people if these birds are catched, sold, bought, harmed, and if used as a pet.

During this season each year several migratory birds visit the Maldives if strong storms coincide with the Northern birds winter migrations period. These migratory birds bring additional beauty to our ecosystem. So EPA recommends not to harm or catch these birds and provide a safe environment while they stay in the Maldives.
