The government plans to develop Funadhoo as the atoll’s hub, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced in the discussion with the Funadhoo Council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) during his visit to Shaviyani Atoll.
The President and First Lady are accompanied on this tour by Cabinet ministers, senior executives from the President’s Office, and a delegation of high-ranking government officials.
The meeting’s focus was on the most pressing concerns confronting the island’s residents. Coastal erosion, land scarcity, and the deterioration of the airport road were among the issues mentioned by councillors.
Moreover, they voiced concern about Farukolhu Island, a nearby uninhabited island, and talked about resuming regular use of buildings now used as Covid-19 management facilities. Also, addressed a number of other important topics concerning the island’s social well-being and development.
Furthermore, President Solih was briefed on activities carried out by WDC for the advancement and well-being of the island community, and requested for a dedicated women’s center as it would make administering events much easier.
During the meeting, President Solih addressed the issues voiced by councillors and WDC members. He indicated that the government intends to develop Funadhoo Island as a focal point for the atoll’s progress, with the harbour, hospital, school, airport, and other public facilities being expanded. He added that the government would repair the airport road and that Farukolhu is already under the authority of the council.
While several projects in the atoll were postponed as a result of Covid-19, the President stated that the country’s economic position has improved, allowing initiatives to be restarted. Other important issues raised by the council, such as coastline erosion and housing challenges, he said, would be brought to the attention of the appropriate government agencies and addressed accordingly.
