Ministry of the Environment has modified the waste management regulation, allowing authorities to penalize those who do not segregate their waste.
According to the rule, waste from residences, buildings, workplaces, and other official sites must be segregated in the ways specified.
Waste from residential islands and cities outside of Male’ City, as well as industrial islands, resorts, and other waste-producing areas, must be divided into four categories.
CATEGORIES OF WASTE:
- Compostable waste
- Biodegradable waste
- Plastic bottles, metals and glass
- Others
According to the legislation, Waste in Male’ City must be divided into compostable waste, biodegradable waste, and plastic bottles, Other sorts of garbage must be disposed of separately.
According to the modification to the regulation, authorized trash collectors who transport waste by land and sea must now transport waste separately, rather than mixing the various types.

Parties that fail to segregate their garbage will be fined under the legislation.
Households – MVR 300 the first time and MVR 500 the second time.
waste producers in councils, local businesses, yachts, liveaboards, and state institutions – MVR 500 for the first violation, MVR 700 for the second violation, and MVR 1,000 for a third violation.
Producers of waste on industrial islands and resorts will be penalized MVR 1,000 for the first violation, MVR 1,500 for the second violation, and MVR 2,000 for a third violation.
