President of the Maldives, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has met with the Kulhudhuffushi city council.

The meeting was held virtually. Kulhudhuffushi City mayor, Mohamed Athif and city council members took part in this meeting.

The main discussion went throughout the meeting was the problems that city has been facing and plausible solution for these problems.

In a press release announced fromĀ  the president’s office yesterday mentioned that , members of the Kulhudhuffushi City Council claimed that the government’s recently announced “Gedhoruveriya” credit program will substantially alleviate housing difficulties in the city.

Mohamed Athif, Mayor of Kulhudhuffushi City Council, emphasized the government’s efforts to alleviate the burden of housing finances, emphasizing that the “Gedhoruveriya” loan program benefits a significant number of inhabitants. He also emphasized the significance of completing housing developments for the city’s growth. The new administration has resumed construction on 105 previously stopped housing projects in Kulhudhuffushi City. In addition, the administration had already completed the finishing work on 40 dwelling units in Kulhudhuffushi City to help alleviate the housing shortage.

During the meeting, President Solih stated that when allocating the MVR 1.5 billion budget for housing projects to be carried out by the government in the year 2022,Ā  the government will prioritize islands in need of housing, such as Kulhudhuffushi City. He also indicated that the government is contemplating raising the money set aside for the “Gedhoruveriya” loan scheme, allowing for loans of up to MVR700,000 for larger projects. According to the Mayor of the Kulhudhuffushi City Council, the city now has about 1200 people in need of homes.

The President and Councilors discussed a variety of other important issues, including healthcare, road construction, and waste management. Residents of the city have already begun to reap the advantages of the ongoing hospital expansion project and the addition of additional healthcare services, according to the councilors. Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital is now undergoing several upgrades, and the tertiary hospital project is close to completion and will be up for bids soon. The Councilors also addressed the city’s ongoing road construction project, suggesting changes to road layouts as well as the addition of fire hydrants and “dewatering” drainage systems. The present road layouts, planning, and drainage systems, according to President Solih, were meant to be efficient and long-lasting.

Members of the council expressed their gratitude for the government’s waste management initiative, claiming that it had significantly reduced the city’s problem with accumulated waste. They signed a petition to keep the waste management initiative going, citing the council’s lack of human resources. Improvements to the seawall at the airport area, the installation of lighting at the airport, and enhancements to the ports were also addressed by the Councilors and the President.

President Solih addressed the Councilors’ concerns and presented them with the most up-to-date information on the city’s existing and planned initiatives. He added that the administration will endeavor to put in place a quick solution to the human resource problem. President Solih stated that the government will continue to support all city, island, and atoll councils as needed. He underlined that the government’s fundamental goal is to build effective decentralized governance.
