President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih delivered a speech to the country on World Environment Day, which is marked every year on June 5th.

President Solih emphasized the significance of protecting our natural ecosystems and guaranteeing the long-term viability of our resources in his written message, which was released this morning.

The topic for this year’s World Environment Day is ‘Reimagine, Recreate, Restore,’ which focuses on ecosystem restoration. President Solih mentioned that managing our natural resources in a sustainable manner is critical to preserving our environment for future generations. In this spirit, he noted that 73 distinct locations have been designated as protected, accounting for approximately 13% of the Maldives’ natural house reefs. He also mentioned that the Maldives has three atolls that had previously been designated as UNESCO Biosphere Reserves.

Protecting our islands and atolls, which are rich in natural resources, will benefit the economy, according to President Solih. He went on to say that the tourist business employs over 50,000 people directly and indirectly, while the fisheries and agriculture businesses employ over 17,000 people, all of which are reliant on natural resources.

The President went on to describe a number of government initiatives aimed at ensuring the long-term use of our natural resources, including a proposal to reserve 20% of Maldivian oceans by 2030. This proposal is part of the Global Ocean Alliance’s global campaign to safeguard at least 30% of the world’s ocean as Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) by 2030. Under the ‘Blue Economy’ program, he also reaffirmed the country’s commitment to sustainable ocean and environmental resource stewardship.

Even the tiniest imbalance in our ecosystems can take many years, if not decades, to repair organically. As a result, we must strive to maintain and conserve our resources while avoiding harming our ecosystems.

President Solih stated.

He spoke on a number of critical efforts, including sustainable waste management and the ambitious goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. He also mentioned that the Maldives has already prohibited the import of numerous single-use plastics, with more to come in the future years. President Solih also highlighted the Maldives’ renewable energy sources, such as the solar PV hybrid energy systems that have been installed around the country, totaling over 31.5 megawatts of power.

The President concluded his address by pleading with Almighty Allah to bless our efforts to safeguard natural resources and establish a long-term connection with our environment and ecosystems.
