Sh. Funadhoo environmental NGO named “United New Generation Adults” (UNGA) has commenced “the green project” on 9th January 2021. The key aim of this project is to cultivate rare and vulnerable species of plants on the island.
According to (UNGA), in order to tackle environmental issues and maintain their island clean and tidy, every Saturday they conduct a cleaning program called “Saafukura Honihiru”.
They have gathered waste materials from all over the island in this program and have now started to deliver these wastes to Parley for Oceans for recycling. However, they decided to have cleaning program on certain Saturdays and to stick with “The Green Project” on other Saturdays.
As stated by Yameen Mohamed, President of the (UNGA), 125 Small leave Orange Mangrove (Kan’doo) have so far been planted for this project.

“At the experimental phase, we planted around 125 Small leave Orange Mangrove (Kan’doo) stems in 5 different areas in the island and we will check which area has the highest growth. The planted (Kan’doo) stems are in mangroves and wetlands, so we’ll keep a close watch on the tiny (Kan’doo) stems as the crabs could eat them.”

Yameen stated that in the island there are very few Small leave Orange Mangrove (Kan’doo), since this is the main reason why they have started “The Green Project “.
“Many plants have been cut down for various projects and another reason to start “The Green Project” is to address this rapid deforestation on the island, since we need to reforest as many areas as possible and we will continue to do so. “

Yameen emphasized the need for help from the entire island community to make this project a success and to preserve the greenery of the island.
