The Cochin-Kulhudhuffushi cargo ferry services started today with the historical arrival and docking of the first cargo ferry from Cochin at Kulhudhuffushi jetty.
The official ferry services launched on 21st September.
Due to the ongoing pandemic and two people from Kulhudhuffushi testing positive for COVID 19, the celebratory activities scheduled for this event was cancelled. Kulhudhuffushi has been put under the status of monitoring and since then, arrival and departure from Kulhudhuffushi has been temporarily stopped.
According to the Maldives focal point agent, ‘Maldives Shipping lining’, 500tonnes of cargo will be brought on the first ferry.
The cargo ferry which can hold up to 3000tonnes of cargo will be docked at the Kulhudhuffushi port and the cargo will be cleared by the staff of Maldives Ports limited, stationed in Kulhudhuffushi port. According to KPL, 50 of their staff will be involved in this process.

As per information provided by Maldives States Shipping, the Maldivian agent in charge of providing the Cochin-Kulhudhuffushi cargo ferry services, the first ferry to Kulhudhuffushi will be carrying 5ootonnes of cement and two containers filled with food supplies and products of everyday use. The authorities also inform that in the next 6 months, this ferry will be used to travel between Cochin and Kulhudhuffushi.
