Our forefathers used to say that, the time of the pandemic upon the humans is a wrath from god. For some, it might be a wrath, while for others it might also be a blessing. (Bukhaaree 5734, Al Tabary 2/116, Fathul Baaree 6/512)
The story of the pandemic that our ancestors used to tale out for us is the time of the “Spanish Flu” in 1918. National Geographic statistics states that, almost 2/3rd of the world were down with the flu and almost 100 million people died. Maldivian government stated that, the flu reached the island nation around 17th November 1922 and around that time a lot of people in Maldives started to get sick.
It is recorded that at the time of this flu, the people at the capital started to get sick almost at the same time. And within the span of a month, Male’ itself had lost almost 400 people to the disease. By this time, the diseases has already traveled out skirts of Male’ and reached some of the atolls which took a drastic effect on many islands. It is believed that the symptoms of the disease is common and it made the people get flu like symptoms with body aches and severe dehydration.
At that time, King Shamsudheen has started to put drastic measures to tackle anyway he can to minimize the catastrophic effect of the disease. People already started to help out one another in any form or manner, and the self discipline of Maldivians were shown at a high level. People had turned towards the one true god and started to supplicate for his mercy. The then government had asked all the islands that are of without the disease to cater for the sick in any way they could by the 25th December 1922. The government had also asked the chiefs of the island to sternly emphasize on self care and self cleanliness to tackle the disease.
Even for a thing to note down for the current businessmen, the then government had asked to bring forward the humanity and help the sick and poor in need. And at that time, they were followed this way as well.
I ask Allah SWT for all of us to keep us safe from this pandemic and help the sick and poor in need. Ameen.
