Mariyam Laisa Abdul Rasheed began playing chess at the young age of twelve, back in 2017. She is a ninth grade student of Thaajuddhin school and is from H.Dh. Hanimadhoo.
Soon after Laisa began playing, she started scoring multiple wins in school and in national competitions. Her brilliant talent gained her a spot in the National Junior Chess Team in 2019 and was listed as a member of Senior Chess Team in 2020.
Some of her notable achievements include:
• 2nd place in Inter-school Chess Championship 2017
• 3rd place in Open Chess Championship 2017 (Under 12)
• 2nd place in Milo Chess Colors Award 2017 (Under 12)
• 8th place in National Women’s Championship 2019
• 4th place in National Junior Championship 2019 (Under 14)
• 2nd place in Second Junior Chess Championship 2020 (Under 16)
• 2nd place in Maldives National Chess Championship 2020
• 2nd place in Maldives Online Chess Championship 2020
Laisa was able to add a new win to her list of triumphs with the opportunity to take part in Asian Online Chess Camp for Girls Under 20. Every Asian country taking part in the camp
was to nominate one girl fitting the age category and Laisa was chosen to represent Maldives.

The camp is organised by Asian Chess Federation (ACF) in cooperation with Woman Chess (WOM) and is supported by FIDE Development Fund. The duration of the camp is from August 1 to 20.
The training courses conducted via Zoom will feature world famous trainers. Among these trainers are World Champion Grand Master Vishwanathan Anand, Grand Master Judit Polgar, and Grand Master Jacob Aagaard.
Laisa, who is a part of National Chess Team is also preparing to compete in the Online Chess Olympiad that will take place from 31st of July to 2nd August. National Chess team of Maldives has already been qualified for the category four matches.
“My dream is to reach as many milestones as I can, to become a better player and make my country proud,” stated Laisa, while speaking about her ambitions.
Laisa believes that her success was a product of her parents’ love and continued support. Her heart is full of gratitude towards her coach, teammates and Thaajudheen school for always having her back and supporting her through thick and thin.
Even though she started playing chess as a hobby, she has honed her talent to make wins that her country and homeland is proud of.
