The Hoarafushi Council (Haa Alifu Atoll) has announced that they will identify and take action against individuals who illegally dump waste in the island, utilizing CCTV or assistance from online monitoring personnel.
The Hoarafushi Council stated that they would publicize videos of individuals caught illegally dumping waste, based on evidence submitted by CCTV cameras or online monitoring personnel.
Furthermore, the Council stated that legal action would be taken against such individuals under the Decentralization Act of the Maldives.
The Decentralization Act stipulates that, in connection with the powers granted to the Council, any party that disobeys an order issued by the Council may be fined an amount between MVR 500 (five hundred) and MVR 5,000 (five thousand), depending on the severity of the offense.
Following the first phase of installing security cameras on the streets of Hoarafushi, the island council began work on the second phase in June of this year.
Hoarafushi is recognized as an island that has achieved significant developmental progress and prioritizes cleanliness.
