The signing of the grant agreements provided by the Haa Dhaalu Atoll Council to procure a buggy for every island in the atoll has commenced.
Mohamed Waheed, President of the Haa Dhaalu Atoll Council, told “Thiladhun” that they are currently signing agreements with the island councils for the conditional grant, which is scheduled to be issued to all islands in the atoll for the purchase of a buggy. Waheed also stated that the grant has already been deposited for some councils.
Waheed said that this agreement has so far been established with all islands except Hanimaadhoo, Hirimaradhoo, Nolhivaranfaru, Nolhivaram, and Neykurendhoo.
“It is important to note that this involves a decision made by the Atoll Council during both the previous and current terms: to deduct the unpaid amount of loans taken by the islands from the Atoll Treasury during the time of the ‘Katheebs’ (island chiefs) from the grant provided for purchasing the buggy. Since this is a decision of the Atoll Council, we must implement it,” Waheed said.
He added that there are also councils that have been consistently repaying those loans.
Waheed stated that the purpose of assisting the islands of the atoll, including Kulhudhuffushi City, in procuring buggies is to provide ease and convenience for the island residents and visitors.
The Atoll Council is providing assistance for the purchase of an eight-seater buggy for each island. The Atoll Council has decided to allocate MVR 91,538.00 to each island for this purpose.
After signing the grant agreement, the Kulhudhuffushi City Council highlighted the financial assistance provided annually by the Atoll Council, funded through its budget, to establish such important resources needed by the islands of the atoll, including Kulhudhuffushi City.
