President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu last night called on local and foreign businesses to invest in the Boduthiladhunmathi region, describing the development and opening of Hanimaadhoo International Airport as a golden opportunity that must be fully utilized.

Speaking at the ceremony held in Hanimaadhoo, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, to mark the completion of the airport development project, the President said the new airport will serve as a crucial gateway for the economic advancement of the region.

He noted that when his administration assumed office, about 30 percent of the Hanimaadhoo Airport project had been completed. He said the remaining 70 percent was accelerated through the collaborative efforts of the Indian government, the contractor, and the Maldivian government. According to the President, this rapid progress was driven by the goal of quickly creating economic opportunities for the people of Hanimaadhoo, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, and the wider Boduthiladhunmathi region, while also attracting investors and expanding income prospects.

The President said the development will generate a significant number of job opportunities in the tourism sector and is expected to bring progress to fisheries, agriculture, and other industries. He also highlighted that the government has begun work on the Maldives Economy Gateway in Haa Alifu Atoll.

He encouraged small, medium, and large Maldivian businesses to visit the region and explore investment opportunities.

“The work that begins today, or the gateway that is opening, I urge everyone, especially Maldivian businesses, small, medium, and large, to come to this region. To invest in this region. Seize this opportunity now. This is a huge golden opportunity. This deep, broad golden opportunity exists in all sectors in this region, and the government is ready to facilitate everything possible to make things easier for us,” he said.

The President also invited foreign investors to make use of this opening. He said the development of Hanimaadhoo Airport will bring major progress to the overall development of the island.

During last night’s inauguration, the first aircraft to land on the new runway was a Maldivian A-320 carrying the President. It is the largest aircraft ever to land at Hanimaadhoo International Airport. The captain of the flight was a pilot originally from Hanimaadhoo.

The practical work for the airport development project began on January 18, 2023, under the 800 million dollar Line of Credit signed between the Exim Bank of India and the Maldivian government in 2019. A total of 137 million dollars from the credit line was allocated for the project.

The project was undertaken by India’s JMC Projects Limited, a company that carries out construction and energy sector projects.

The developed airport has the capacity to serve 1.2 million passengers annually. As part of the project, a 2.46 kilometer runway was constructed, along with a 42,000 square foot apron, a 2,465 meter runway, and a 10,500 square meter passenger terminal. A 3,800 square meter Air Traffic Control tower and a fuel jetty were also built.
