The fishermen of Haa Alifu Ihavandhoo have begun using a pickup truck provided by the Ihavandhoo Council to transport ice from the island’s ice plant.
An agreement to provide this pickup truck to the fishermen was signed between the Ihavandhoo Council and the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) last September.
Regarding this assistance provided by the Council to the Ihavandhoo fishermen, Council President Sabahu told “Thiladhun” that the objective of this initiative is to arrange a system where the public can easily obtain ice.
Furthermore, the President noted that due to this initiative, fishermen will not have to transport ice using handcarts in the future.
Following the commencement of the pickup truck’s use, a post on the Facebook page “Masveri Ihavandhoo,” which shares the activities of Ihavandhoo fishermen and fishing matters in the North, stated that the transition from using handcarts to the pickup truck for transporting ice from the Ihavandhoo MIFCO ice plant has brought additional satisfaction and convenience to the fishermen.
Ihavandhoo is a notable island in the fishing industry of the northern Maldives.
