It has become a threat to enter and exit from Harbour Channel of HDh. Hirimaradhoo due to the sand build-up at the channel.

Speaking regarding the situation, President of the Hirimaradhoo Council Mohamed Waheed stated that the vessels has been facing various challenges in entering and exiting due to sand build-up at the harbour channel for the past two years.

Moreover, Waheed noted that during the past two years various incidents has occurred due sand build-up at the harbour channel entrance. He highlighted that a cargo vessel was severely damaged when it ran aground at the harbour channel entrance.

Furthermore, Waheed pointed out even though speedboats can use the harbour channel, the boats carrying goods to the island and the ferry boats operating in the atolls were not able enter or exit the harbour. And sometimes vessels are stuck inside the harbour till the high tide to enter and exit harbour.

In addition, Waheed further stated that council and people had made several requests during the previous administration to resolve the issue, but was not resolved. The council has now requested the current government to resolve the issue and the council has recently travelled to Male’ city to meet with the concerned authorities and shared these concerns with the Minister.

Waheed also pointed out that it is a matter of great concern for the residents of the island that the habrour will not be able to be used in near future if the problem persists, which is worsening day by day.
