Vertical Farming pilot project organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare has commenced at Hanimaadhoo Agriculture Center.
The project was officially launched at a special ceremony held at Hanimaadhoo Agriculture Center yesterdsay evening by Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare Aishath Rameela. Several senior officials of the ministry were present on the occasion.
In mid-January, Ministry awarded the project to VC Group Private Limited to explore whether vertical farming could be carried out in the Maldives on a large scale. The agreement between the Ministry of Agriculture and the company is aimed at introducing state-of-the-art facilities and ensuring food security in a land scarce country like the Maldives.
As part of the agreement, three types of vertical hydroponics setup have been set up at Hanimaadhoo Agriculture Center. These are the planting system in vertical A frame structures using nutrient film techniques, the pine apple tower system, and the aeroponics tower system.
Moreover, under the project, information collected by the team of employees working at Hanimaadhoo Agriculture Center will help identify the most suitable vertical farming system for the Maldives. These systems will be taught to farmers in future programs, as per Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare.
