Kulhudhuffushi City Council has urged people not to harm or disturb Flamingos migrating to Kulhudhuffushi City.

According to Kulhudhuffushi City, during this time of the year, flocks of migratory Flamingos are spotted in city’s mangrove. And with these birds, Kulhudhuffushi city’s mangrove has become more attractive and it brings happiness and more life to the island.

Moreover, the city council noted that it the responsibility of all to provide a safe and comfortable environment for such seasonal birds to stay in the island, during migrating season. Further people using Canoe and drones are advised not to go close to the point where the birds are disturbed and not to do anything that could harm or disturb these birds.

Usually Flamingos are pink in color, however, Flamingo flocks spotted in Kulhudhuffushi City were mostly white in color since they have not received enough nutrients.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced 104 species of birds including Greater Flamingo as protected birds back on June 23, 2021. Therefore, under the law actions will be taken against the people if these birds are catched, sold, bought, harmed, and if used as a pet.

During this season each year several migratory birds visit the Maldives if strong storms coincide with the Northern birds winter migrations period. These migratory birds bring additional beauty to our ecosystem. Therefore, EPA recommends not to harm or catch these birds and provide a safe environment while they stay in the Maldives.
