HDh. Hanimaadhoo Council has started planting trees in the island’s Harbour areas and Driving Track area.
In June, the council started a program to plant 1,000 trees across the island to make Hanimaadhoo greener. As part of the program, the council staff has been carrying out tree plantation activities on the streets of the island and other places frequently.
As part of the program, palm trees and larger trees are being planted in the harbour and driving track areas in collaboration with Hanimaadhoo Council and JMC of India, which develops Hanimaadhoo Airport.
According to the Vice President of Hanimaadhoo Council Firaq Mohamed, the large trees planted at the harbour will not only make the area greener but also beneficial to the harbour users.
Previously speaking regarding the program, Council Executive Ibrahim Ali stated that the target is to plant 1,000 trees in a year. Moreover, Ibrahim Ali stated that a large number of trees have been cut down and relocated as part of the airport development project in the island and hence there has been a reduction in trees on the roads as well. He also noted that even though the initiative is to plant 1,000 trees, they will try to do more than that.
Under the program, fruit trees, flower trees and shade trees will also be planted. In particular, two varieties of trees, ‘Kandu’ and ‘Uni Trees’, which are on verge of extinction in the island will be planted in large numbers, according to Ibrahim Ali.
