The Ministry of Agriculture has launched a program to set up mango farms in islands of the country.

In order to start the program, the first mango saplings was planted in Ha. Utheemu. A total of 40 mango saplings were planted in island’s mango farm. The program was inaugurated by Agriculture Minister Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan.

The Minister stated the mango saplings were brought from Bangladesh. The program has been launched in the Maldives after a thorough knowledge and experience during a visit to Bangladesh. He stated that the commonly grown mango trees in the Maldives is difficult to grow, but the newly introduced species from Bangladesh is easy to grow and fruit of the tree is sweet.

The minister further stated that these plants will be well grown and fruits will be produced in 3-4 years and the councils should properly maintain the saplings or fields planted during the government-funded tree plantation programs in the islands. He described it as an important step forward for the country.

Moreover, even though the program has been started only in Utheemu, additional mango saplings will receive in October and plantation of mango fields in many islands will begin. Furthermore, the Ministry of Agriculture has also launched a program to plant a new generation of coconut trees in the Maldives. Program is aimed at planting 5,000 saplings.

This is a completely new initiative by the Ministry to plant food-bearing trees in islands of the country. After the program to plant a new generation of coconut trees, the plantation of mango trees has been started as a second program.
