High Commission of India in Maldives released MVR 2.73 million to the Government of Maldives

As grant assistance for ongoing execution of 03 high-impact community development projects (HICDPs), the High Commission of India in Maldives has released MVR 2.73 million to the Government of Maldives.

The funds will be utilized towards initiation of work on the ‘Sports complex development in Gdh. Gadhdhoo’, early completion of ‘Inclusive Education Support (IES) units across the  Aboobakuru School (GDh.Thinadhoo), Ihadhdhoo School (L.Gan) and HA. AEC (HA.Dhidhdhoo)’ and on final completion of ‘Installation of 100 Street lights in Th. Veymandoo’.

MVR 6.5 million grant is  committed by India for the ‘Sports complex development in Gdh. Gadhdhoo’  aiming to develop an international standard multi-purpose sports complex in  GDh. Gadhdhoo to provide adequate and sustainable recreation, sports, training and wellness facilities to the residents of the island. And it is expected to promote youth empowerment and contribute to community development. 

The project for ‘Strengthening of IES units in Aboobakuru School, Ihadhdhoo School and HA. AEC envisages development of capacities and infrastructure of the IES units and to provide teaching and learning material. Project also includes development of online learning resources for the ‘Students with Complex Learning Profile (SCLP)’ and to train teachers on using assistive technologies. The total project cost is MVR 4.64 million. The release of the latest instalment will support early completion of this project.

Under the project for ‘Installation of 100 Street lights in Th. Veymandoo’ under the HICDPs scheme, is completed and ready for inauguration, provides a proper street lighting system for the island by ensuring reduction in electricity consumption and maintenance costs as well.

Moreover, 28 high-impact projects supported by India under a grant assistance of MVR 155 million cover sectors of fisheries, eco-tourism, sustainable development, tourism, sports, agriculture, culture, health, island infrastructure and education. In addition, India has also extended MVR 106 million grant to support implementation of 18 developmental projects across Maldives. Of these total 46 grant projects, a total of 21 projects have been completed and inaugurated and 5 more are in the pipeline for inauguration, including eco-tourism zones in Addu city, bottled water-plant in HA. Hoarafushi and the Th. Veymandoo street lights project.

These projects constitute an important dimension of the vibrant development partnership between India and the Maldives. These projects are driven by the needs of communities on the islands. Most of these projects are steered and executed by City and Local Councils and are expected to enhance the capacities of locally-elected representatives and support the decentralization efforts of the Government of Maldives. 

Furthermore, the Government of India hopes that the swift completion of these projects will make a difference to communities on the islands, and write a new chapter of partnership between India and Maldives.
