HDh. Hanimaadhoo Council has stated that funds have been allocated for the construction of a modern waste collection centre in Hanimaadhoo.
All the members of Hanimaadhoo Council are currently in Male’ city on an official visit to meet with various ministries to discuss important issues related to Hanimaadhoo.
The council held a meeting with Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Aminath Shauna to discuss ways to solve waste discard in Hanimaadhoo.
According to the Vice President of Hanimaadhoo Council Firaq Mohamed stated that the Hanimaadhoo Council had already announced to find a contractor to develop a waste collection centre as part of the government’s project to build a modern waste collection centre in the islands. However, the project could not be carried out as the cost was more than the budget allocated for the purpose and the funds required for the project were not fully met.
Moreover, an office, a security post and a vehicle garage are to be developed as part of the project. In addition, fences will be installed around the site and gates will be installed. Also, the place will be developed in a way that waste can be segregated accordingly.
The Council also published the rules for safe waste management and disposal in March. However, the rule is not being fully implemented as the currently used waste collection centre does not have ways to manage waste effectively. And the rules can be fully implemented once the project is completed.
