Vice President Faisal Naseem has travelled to Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, on Saturday to attend the 2022 UN Climate Change Conference.

The UN Climate Change Conference encompasses the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP27), the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP17) and the fourth session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Paris Agreement (CMA4).

The Sharm El-Sheikh International Convention Center will host the conference’s official opening plenary today, November 6, 2022. For the Maldives, COP27 is a momentous occasion and a chance to discuss the country’s aspirations for sustainable development on a worldwide scale. On November 7, 2022, the Vice President will make a statement on behalf of the Maldives.

The Maldives announced an ambitious plan in 2019 to achieve net zero emissions by 2030, in line with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s advocacy for the rights of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and global climate resilience.

From participation in multilateral institutions to national-level initiatives, The Maldives has taken the lead on numerous initiatives to address and raise awareness of the climate emergency, with a particular focus on promoting the financial burden of resilience building and climate adaptation for less developed countries.

The Vice President is accompanied by a high-level delegation of government officials.
