“Alun Balun” a new resale market for Baa Atoll has been introduced by the Women’s Development Committees (WDCs) of the seven “Namoona” islands of the Baa Atoll in collaboration with Soneva Namoona NGO and with assistance from their respective island councils.
The “Alun Balun” market, which is now in its trial phase, will let people on the islands of Maalhos, Dharavandhoo, Kihaadhoo, Dhonfanu, Kudarikilu, Kamadhoo, and Kendhoo buy and sell used products. The market’s goal is to promote a culture where products are used again and again rather than being thrown away. The goal of the pilot is to create an inter-island secondhand market that will provide affordable access to used products, increase product usability, and cut down on waste sent to landfills.
The WDCs intercept re-usable items from households before they are thrown away, and clean and repair them, where necessary. After that, the goods are delivered to the WDC of a different Namoona island for resale. The WDCs can avoid the issue of reselling used items in tiny communities by rotating goods throughout the islands because the items they are selling will originate from another island. The proceeds from the selling of the goods go to the WDCs.
According to Mariyam Nishreen, from Dhonfanu WDC, the Alun Balun market began at Baa Atoll will provide women more possibilities to save resources while giving the WDCs a source of money. Our aim is that other islands in Baa Atoll and beyond will follow in the footsteps of the Namoona WDCs of Baa Atoll Nishreen added.
Moreover, Reduce Manager at Soneva Namoona Khady Hamid stated that “Soneva Namoona is thrilled to be working with such passionate and ambitious women from the seven Namoona Islands across Baa Atoll on the pressing issue of waste. Collectively focusing our efforts on the reduction of waste generation with the Alun Balun resale market will hopefully inspire us all to think twice before we throw an item away.”
On Saturday, the Alun Balun market started simultaneously on each of the seven Namoona islands. On October 8, a second round of the market will be held in Kihaadhoo. Thereafter, every Saturday, the market will move to a new Namoona island.
