A ceremony has been held to mark this year’s “World Patient Safety Day”.
The ceremony was held in accordance to celebrate the Worlds Patient Safety Day at Maldives and also to launch the National Standards for Clinical Laboratories, National Guideline for Antenatal and Postnatal care, Hospital Acquired Infection Prevention and Surveillance Guideline and Maldives Healthcare Quality Standards Digital PLatform.
The World Health Organization (WHO) launched a campaign in solidarity with patients to mark September 17, as “World Patient Safety Day” since global indicators show that every year an estimated 134 million adverse events occur due to unsafe care in hospitals in low- and middle-income countries contributing to 2.6 million deaths. Additionally, about 40 percent of patients experience harm in ambulatory and primary care settings with an estimated 80 percent of these being preventable. Moreover, in 2019, WHO estimated that 1 in 10 patients is harmed while receiving hospital care.
This year’s theme for Patient Safety Day is “Medication Safety – Medication without harm”. In addition, publications of the very comprehensive standard and guidelines mentioned above, will lay a concrete foundation to prevent all avoidable harm to all patients seeking healthcare and also healthcare workers.
