Neykurendhoo Council has stated that the Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has assured that the construction of Neykurendhoo Prison will be completed before the end of next year.

Neykurendhoo Council is currently on a visit to Male’ city to discuss the government’s projects that will be carried out in Neykurendhoo and further needs of the island. During the visit, the council met with Home Minister Imran Abdulla.

The Neykurendhoo prison project is a long-awaited project of the citizens of Neykurendhoo. Initially, former President Mohamed Nasheed pledged to build a prison in Neykurendhoo during his visit to Neykurendhoo to win support for party (MDP) candidates in the 2011 local council elections.

However, the project was not started. According to Minister Imran, since this is now a presidential pledge of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the work will be carried out as soon as the budget for the project is arranged.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has announced three times that it is seeking for interested parties to conduct an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and a Social Impact Assessment (SIA) for the Neykurendhoo Prison Project
