Cutting mangrove plants from the Nolhivaram mangrove was prohibited by the Nolhivaram Council.
The council has issued a notice regarding the issue of cutting mangrove plants, stating that it has been discovered that numerous plants have been cut down from the mangrove.
According to the statement , council has stated that this has been a major issue and it will have a greater impact on the natural environment and requested not to cut plants from the mangrove.
“During our forefathers’ time, cutting of mangrove plants such as kandoo, randoo, and thela (types of mangrove plants) was not practiced.” by Nolhivaram council member Mohamed Musthafa
According to a council member, the matter of cutting mangrove plants was raised to council’s attention by several elders. It was also stated that the mangrove trees found in the Maldives were protected since the damage to the environment would be irreversible if they were cut down.
The youths of Nolhivaram started an initiative to plant 200 mangrove plants known as “Boduvaki” after the plants began to die for unknown reasons.
Many mangroves have recently been discovered to be dying on the islands of the northern area. Sh.Feydhoo, Sh.Farukolhu, Hdh.Neykurendhoo, Hdh.Nolhivaram, Hdh.Vaiakardhoo, Hdh.Keylakunu, and Ha.Kela are among the names in this category. The subsequent island council brought the situation to the attention of the government.
