‘Advocating the rights of children (ARC)’ is deeply concerned about the fire that occurred at Kudakudhinge Hiya last Sunday , which was the third fire in less than one and a half months. The number of children residing in Kudakudhinge Hiya has been declining in recent months, according to ARC, as more and more children are being sent to other Shelters around the country. Thus, this fire occurrence was very alarming.
On a statement released by them last Sunday, ARC has reiterates its demand that the State strengthen security at Kudakudhinge Hiya and protect the safety of all children living there.
ARC further urges relevant authorities to conduct an immediate investigation into the causes of these frequent fire occurrences, since this pattern has the potential to result in the death or serious harm of a child in state care.

To conclude, they mentioned that these fires follow a string of recent unpleasant events at Kudakudhinge Hiya, which are the consequence of a variety of problems inside the Shelter, including a failure to appropriately administer the facility and serve the needs of children, which have been compounded by the Covid-19 outbreak.
