Extreme weather in the Northern Atolls has caused massive wave surges.
From Haa Alif Atoll to Lhaviyani Atoll, the Maldives Meteorology Services (MET) has issued an orange warning until 1715 hours on Friday.
According to MET , “Fairly widespread rain with occasional heavy showers and thunderstorms will be experienced over the country.”
As stated by MET Office , Surface winds will vary between southwest/westerly at 17 – 27 miles per hour in central and northern atolls and 10-20 miles per hour in southern atolls. Winds may increase 50 – 60 miles per hour during squally showers.
Due to harsh weather conditions, several islands in the northern atolls have witnessed the following events : Harsh winds tore the roofs off of homes, trees, and boats moored at the jetty due to strong waves, and floods occurred on some islands as a result of nonstop rain.
Scheduled flights to Haa Alif Hoarafushi Airport were temporarily stopped on Friday due to wave surges triggered by severe weather in the Northern Atolls. Scheduled flights have been canceled because a significant amount of rocks and sand have accumulated on the airport’s runway as a result of the waves in the area.

According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), in addition to Hoarafushi, the Haa Alif atoll’s Uligamu, Thuraakunu, and Dhiddhoo, as well as three islands in the Shaviyani Atoll, have been hit by surge waves, causing destruction. Milandhoo, Funadhoo, and Komandoo are among those islands.
Extreme weather also experienced in HDh Atoll, including HDh Kulhudhufushi , Vaikaradhoo, and Nehlaidhoo .
President of the Kulhudhufushi Council Abdul-Latheef Hassan said that strong winds tore the roof off a house and destroyed one of the buildings at the Kulhudhufushi School.
The warning orange was extended by the MET office for torrential rain with possible floods, high winds of 30-40 mph, gust winds of 60 mph, rough seas, and swell winds.
