H.Dh. Nolhivaramfaru School has collected 1.25 tons of plastic waste and presented to parley for recycling.

“ Parley for oceans” is an environmental organization that addresses environmental threats and ocean plastic pollution in Maldives. Parley has been working in the Maldives for over two years trying to prevent plastic going into ocean.

According to Nolhivaranfaru School principal, Ali Ahmed the collection work has been done with the help of students, parents and the staffs.

“We began work in the year2019, but because of the Covid19 pandemic, we were unable to deliver. We have collected 50 jumbo plastic bags of plastic waste items from all over the island and kept in the school meanwhile delivering it to parley for recycling. The delivery work fully completed at the end of 2020”

Ali stated that the delivery work was a success with the assistance from an islander who runs a guest house named ‘Nolhi Escape.’ Ali said that the cost of delivering waste materials from Nolhivaranfaru to Male via boat financed by the ‘Nolhi Escape’ Guest House.

Ali has thanked the Nolhivaranfaru school students, parents and the staffs for their dedication in the collection of waste items from the island. He has specially thanked “Nolhi Escape” guest house for their support in the delivery process.

While Nolhivaramfaru School has presented 1.25 tones of single use plastic waste to Parley  the Government of Maldives has also  declared a list of Single-Use Plastics (SUPs) banned for import into the Maldives from June 1, 2021.

According to the press release 2020-497, The list, formulated under Presidential Decree, was published in the Government Gazette.
