The north east area of Ihavandhoo beachside which used to look like a landfill, has been immaculately cleaned and developed into a relaxing spot for the islanders to enjoy. The developed area is called “Miskiyy Magu Maizaan”.
This initiative was a brilliant success thanks to the mindfulness of around 6 youth of the island who discussed about it with the council and began work on it with the help of locals and their families.
The ‘Maizaan’ was opened officially on August 20, 2020, last Friday. This area was furbished with barbecue stands, swings by the sea, and is facilitated with a shower fixture for people coming over from a light bath at the sea. There is also a children’s park for the kids to enjoy. With the many seating options and swings, the area is perfect for people of all ages to relax and wind down in the tropical breeze.
This local project by the youth commenced without a set budget and they were able to pull it off, due to the financial help they received from generous donators. The entire project cost MVR 2 lakh and the team gratefully announced that they received the full amount through local donations only.
The team stated that, the only hiccup they have had during the progression was the lockdown situation imposed on the island, twice, after a local was found positive for COVID-19. However, despite the disruption in work, the team was able to pull it off, courtesy to all the help they received from the islanders and for this, the team expressed their heartfelt gratitude towards everyone who lent a hand.
“Miskiyy Maizaan” was officially inaugurated in a small ceremony with the Council President Mohamed Rasheed being the guest of honor.
Following the inaugural, Council President gave a small speech in which he praised the team of youth for their exemplary efforts and teamwork.
Mohamed Rasheed expressed his gratitude towards locals, businessmen, and organisations who facilitated the project. He also stated that, Ihavandhoo’s Council will always lend their assistance to projects like this, that are beneficial to the locals.
