The tree planting program instigated by Hoarafushi council was joined by MNDF Northern Area officers last Saturday.
MNDF Northern area’s commander colonel Ismail Shareef also took part in the greening program.
The initiative was spearheaded by Hoarafushi Council and parliamentarian Ahmed Saleem. Hoarafushi Council stated that MNDF has planted a generous amount of palm trees and vegetation.
“The local citizens were contented and grateful for MNDF’s contribution,” stated Hoarafushi Council.
Earlier this month, Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) had initiated greening activities at the airport area. The corporation noted that all the palm trees and plants cultivated in the airport area were from Sh. Feevah harbour area. After the plants were uprooted for the development of the harbor, they were primed to be reused at Hoarafushi.
In addition to the effort by authorities, locals from Hoarafushi and different organisations and clubs of the island have actively taken part in the greening program of the airport.
During President Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s administration, MTCC was contracted to reclaim land in HA. Maafinolhu to develop the airport. Following the change in government, however, the contract was changed to develop the airport at Hoarafushi lagoon instead.
MTCC was awarded the airport development project for MVR 93 million from the government’s budget.
