HA. Ihavandhoo’s waste yard has recently suffered from severe soil erosion, causing refuse to scatter across the otherwise spotless beach of the small island.
Due to unpredictable weather conditions and high tides, wave surges have been frequenting all over Maldives, including Ihavandhoo, causing massive erosions of the island’s shores.
Ihavandhoo Council’s President, Mohamed Rasheed, stated that the wearing away of land has caused refuse and litter to disperse all over the island’s beaches.
He also stated that the landfill area is prone to erosion and the council has been trying to find a reasonable solution to fix the rising issue.
The Council has disclosed that the landfill contains refuse ageing 13 years, and vocalised that they need a permanent solution for this problem.
Ihavandhoo’s landfill lies approximately 20 feet away from the shore, making it easier for debris and litter to float away following monsoonal wave surges. Ihavandhoo’s council states that this has caused many environmental issues that needs to be looked into.
The island suffered from a similar case back in 2018 as well.
A local has stated that the island no longer has a vehicle to pick away garbage as the one they had malfunctioned recently. Some locals have resorted to throwing their waste directly at the beach causing further environmental problems.
Many islanders are showing concern about the rising environmental issues of the island, hoping the government would pave a way to ease their dilemmas.
