The Prosecutor General’s office has announced that there will be no further convictions for citizens who breached the recent lockdown policy implemented by the government, following the Covid-19 pandemic.

As a result of breaching the lockdown which lasted from April 5th till the end of last month, 582 people were arrested, of which 312 cases were sent to PG for conviction by Maldives Police Service. It is also reported that over 9600 people had been fined for breaching lockdown policy.

A statement released by the Prosecutor General’s office as of today informs that they will no longer pursue cases regarding the breaching of lockdown and such cases had been sent back to Maldives Police Service. However the announcement also states that the collection of fines will continue soon.

The declaration also states that the reason for this decision is to take action regarding the breaching of lockdown in the most impartial way possible. In times when many citizens have lost jobs and are going through difficult standards of living, a criminal record would only make the situation worse although there will not be any leniency for the fines, as per the statement.

Citizens who breach lockdown rules are initially fined by Rf.1000, and a repetition would result in arrest. Fines are to be paid to Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA).
