Nishaan, Abdullah Shafeeq (Vaathy Shafeeq) from Dhidhdhoo who started fishing at the age of fifteen with his father received the National Award of encouragement in line of fishing from the field of fishing.
Shafeeq got interested in fishing due to the special emphasis it had on his father. Shafeeq has worked as a crew member of a fishing boat for 10 years. He was only 25 when he started driving the fishing boat as a sea captain. At the period of 28 of his fishing he has travelled as a sea captain in 4 different boats. The money earned from fishing every week is spent as the boat crew eating expense, oil expense and other expenses on the fishing boat where the half of the rest is for the boat crew members.
The other half of the rest is given to the boat owner. From money earned from fishing Shafeeq built an 18 sailboat, 38 sailboat and a 40 sailboat. From this the 40 sailboat is called “Nuimah” is for fishing rod fishing and big fish fishing, made from carbon fiber for an amount of 8.7 million ruffiya. The captain and crew of the “Nuimah” boat is also Shafeeq. Abdulla Shafeeq is a person who is encouraging and teaching fishing techniques to young fishermen, the people of his island and to those who are interested in fishing. This includes teaching how to steer or helm boats, to gather bait and to use the fishing rod. Already five people from HA.Dhidhdhoo are fishing with the information and experience gained from Shafeeq. He is also an idol when it comes to community services for his island. With his own initiation he has put a net on the fish raft near the island. For this work all the spending including the food and oil expenses were provided by Shafeeq. He also gave funds for the renovation of the island’s mosque. Shafeeq also participates in the island council’s and the island club’s social activities. In 1991 Shafeeq received an award for the encouragement of normal services from the line of doing beneficial social work for the society. Even now Shafeeq is an idol fisherman who does rod fishing and big fish catching as a captain in his boat.
